OUR DESIGN PROCESS
The design process focuses on getting the best product on the market as soon as possible. This is why the first steps in the process and the early decisions are key. Our approach to the design process helps us determine the problems and weaknesses as well as the key features and focus points early on. This provides us with a clear design direction and a successful product at the end of it.
Think of the design process like a funnel. You start at the top of the funnel with an idea but not a clear direction. As you make your way through the design process, you gain knowledge, ideas and an understanding of the product’s potential. You can then make educated decisions, which will direct you towards the best possible outcome for your business.
1. The Research Stage
The first step of the design process is the research phase. This is where we do a lot of secondary research into what the current products on the market are and their price point analysis.
We find the gaps and potential in the market and look for future trends while observing the historic trends. If required we establish the suitable target market for the product and how to reach the target market through the use of branding, styling and product desirability.
2. The Conceptual Stage
Once the research is completed we can begin the conceptual stage.
With a new understanding of the market which the product will be entering, we can then start to produce ideas and future scenarios for the product.
This phase is to create many open-minded ideas, looking at the markets full potential and discovering all possible opportunities.
3. The DevelopmentStage
This is when the decision making starts.
• Which ideas do you see as viable?
• Which is most suitable for the target market?
• Where can these concepts be altered or enhanced to be more suitable?
All of these questions help determine the direction of the product design process so that we can create the best possible outcome. The development stage can be repeated as many times as required.
4. The Final Stage
Once we have defined the functionality and the aesthetics of the product, we can move on to the final design phase.
This is when all the details, like the clips, the buttons, panels that slot together, how the technology is built-in, the manufacturing methods and materiality is decided.
5. Technical Design Stage
From the final design stage we create technical files and CAD files for our model-makers, mould-makers and manufacturers.
We start testing the physical design of the product and create samples for our clients.
From these files we can also get price estimates for production to ensure the product will be on-point in the market. This is the last stage of the process. If all is successful the product can then be moved into production.
